The third Metaverse Art Week was recently held by Decentraland, and it featured the best work from leading digital artists as well as participation from the cosmetics company Estee Lauder. Diverse artistic forms were employed throughout the course of the week-long event to demonstrate both technical breakthroughs and human inventiveness.
One of these comes from acclaimed author and data scientist Ross Goodwin. Goodwin performed "I lie in the desert because the desert lies," a work of generative AI poetry created in cooperation with Metapoet Sasha Stiles, in a venue run by Artnet.
As the name implies, generative AI poetry uses AI to generate lines of poetry. The AI usually starts with a single sentence, word, or even a picture from the poet, and works from there. In this instance, the AI was created by Goodwin and given instructions by the Decentraland team. Ross's avatar then executed the result in the metaverse.
Given the enthusiastic response to that performance, it is safe to assume that generative AI poetry will become more prevalent online and during upcoming art weeks.
